August recorded remarkable rise in employment in Canada

The demand for skilled workers in Canada is increasing as ever, as a booming Canadian economy added 81000 new jobs in August 2019 alone, a month that witnessed a notable increase in the rate of employment in Canada. The country’s unemployment rate during the month remained at 5.7 per cent. Quebec added the highest number of jobs in August, and the unemployment rate of the province dropped to 4.7 per cent. Now Quebec has surpassed British Columbia as the Canadian province with the lowest unemployment rate.

August also witnessed the sharpest rise in employment in Canada among young people aged between 15 and 24, which increased by 42000. Employment for those aged above 55 also increased during this period, adding 22000 new jobs. However, the employment rate remained stable for the core-aged people between 25 and 54 years of age.

Among the provinces, Ontario and Quebec witnessed the biggest rise in employment in Canada, in terms of real numbers. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick also recorded an increase in the number of jobs. Quebec has been witnessing a consecutive rise in employment in the past two months. August alone added 19700 jobs and unemployment rate was also the lowest at 4.7 percent, the lowest since 1976.

While Manitoba added 5200 jobs in August with an unemployment rate of 5.6 per cent, Saskatchewan witnessed an increase in the number of jobs by 2800 and the unemployment rate dropping to 5.1 per cent. New Brunswick also added 2300 jobs in August.

The industries which recorded the highest increase in employment in Canada in the month of August were finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing, a total increase by 22000. Industry sector-wise, Ontario and Quebec witnessed the biggest increase in jobs. The educational services sector of Quebec added 21000 jobs in August. At the same time, the professional, scientific and technical services that witnessed an increase in jobs by 17000, mainly concentrated in British Columbia.
