Diversity, immigration policies help Canada remain global leader in Artificial Intelligence

Canada PR applications

Diversity and immigration policies are helping Canada to retain its supremacy as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence, says a report published by CIC News. They quoted the opinions shared by two industry leaders–Steve Irvine, the founder and CEO of integrate.ai, and Raquel Urtasun, who leads Uber’s self-driving car research program in Toronto–during Fortune Magazine’s Global Forum held this week in Toronto.
Steve Irvine himself started the Artificial Intelligence company integrate.ai in Canada after working for six years in Silicon Valley, US.  After much research, he came to the conclusion that Toronto will be the ideal place to start his company. He revealed that diversity is the major factor that attracted him to Toronto. “Not only can we get great top-end technical talent and research talent, but we naturally have a pool of more diverse candidates who bring interesting perspectives to the big issues we’re dealing with,” CIC NEWS quoted him.

In addition to this, the hardline immigration policies in the US are making global talents in AI choose Canada over the US. According to Irvene, the immigration policies of Canada have made bringing global talents to the country easier. “[Canada] is a great alternative for them — it gets them over to North America, into a big hub that is close to all the other hubs that they would care about, but they can live in a city where they can feel comfortable and that gives them the same level of opportunities,” he was quoted as saying.
Raquel Urtasun, who has been called as the AI “superstar” by Wired Magazine, also observed that diversity and immigration policies are attracting AI talents from America to Canada. She herself was teaching at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago and now she is leading the self-driving car research program of Uber in Toronto.
