Govt announces plan to revamp Australia Skilled Occupational List

Skilled Occupational List

The government is planning to overhaul the Australia Skilled Occupational Visa List with an aim to address the growing demand for foreign skilled workers in different sectors and thus boost the country’s economy. The government will soon review the occupation lists for Australia Skilled Migration to find out which jobs can be filled by foreign skilled workers.
Earlier, concerns had been raised regarding how the current list that consists of 500 jobs did not reflect the demand for skilled workers in some sectors of the Australian economy. It is in this context Australia’s Employment and Skills Minister Michaelia Cash has announced the review of the skilled occupational lists. She said that the lists are being reviewed as part of Australia government’s commitment to ensure that there are no barriers to Australia’s continued economic growth.
The occupation list for Australia Skilled Migration was updated for the last time in March this year. The upcoming review will also focus on ensuring that enough labour force is available to support the Australia government’s 10-year $100 billion infrastructure program.
Data shows that Australia issued more than 80,000 skilled visas in the last financial year. The highest number of visas was issued to skilled workers in the ICT sector. The three separate lists covering temporary skilled workers, medium-long term workers and regional occupations will be reviewed by the Australia government as part of the revamp.
The government has already introduced certain new visas that would encourage migrants to live and work outside the major cities of Australia. It is expected that the updated occupation lists will be ready by March 2020. Under the migration system of Australia, no less than two thirds of the permanent visas issued are granted to skilled migrants.
