General Skilled Migration (GSM)

Those immigrants who wish to move to Australia for work choose the skilled migration pathway and General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is the most popular among migrants. The Three major visa types under the GSM program are as follows:
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
Foreign workers who possess the skills that are in demand in Australia may apply for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189). Those who hold this visa may live permanently in Australia and work anywhere in the country.  To be eligible, the candidate must possess work experience in an occupation featured in the skilled occupations list. They must possess a skills assessment and should have received an invitation to apply for the visa. They must also have scored enough points to qualify.
The holders of subclass 189 visa enjoy so many privileges that include the right to stay permanently in Australia, and work and study anywhere in the country. They also become eligible to enroll in Medicare, sponsor their relatives and travel to and from Australia for five years. They can also apply for Australian citizenship later. Statistics show that 90% of applications for Subclass 189 visa are processed within 20 months, while 75% of applications are processed within 12 months.
Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
In order to obtain this permanent residence visa, the candidate must possess work experience in an eligible occupation and undergo a skills assessment. Besides, they must have received an invitation to apply for this visa and scored required points. The holders can live permanently and work or study anywhere in Australia, enroll in Medicare, sponsor their relatives and travel to and from Australia for five years. Later they may also apply for Australian citizenship. 90% of applications for this visa are processed within 10 months while 75% of applications take 9 months for processing.
Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)
Subclass 489 visa is for skilled workers who wish to live and work in regional Australia. The holders of this visa can apply for Skilled Regional (Permanent) visa (subclass 887) later. The major pathways under Subclass 489 visa are:

  • Invited Pathway
  • Extended Stay Pathway
  • Subsequent Entry Pathway

Under the Extended stay pathway, the holders of subclass 489 visa can stay in Australia for four years. However, they need to stay in the specified region. Under the Subsequent Entry pathway too, the holders can live, work and study in a specified region of Australia. However, no standard processing times are available for subclass 489 visa.
