The Government of Canada will allocate $72 million for the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the purpose of modernising its Global Case Management System. This was revealed in the Fall Economic Statement released recently by Canada’s finance minister Chrystia Freeland. With the modernization feat, Canada aims to turn the Canada Immigration System into a digital platform as opposed to the “current cumbersome paper-based system”.

The purpose of this investment is to “contribute to Canada’s world-class immigration system through enhanced client service, operational efficiency and program integrity, ensuring a higher level of service and internal capacity to bring the skills and talents of new Canadians to our communities.”
As per the Statement, between 2021 and 2026, Canada will commit a total of $750 million for the purpose of supporting its higher immigration targets.

Canada immigration’s role in economic recovery

Canada has already laid down immigration plans for the post-COVID period with an aim to utilize the skills of the newcomers in the economic recovery of the country. So as per the Immigration Plan presented by Canada’s immigration minister Marco Mendicino in the late October, the country will be welcoming more than 400,000 new permanent residents each year.
It is true that the coronavirus pandemic affected the Canada economy in a major way and resulted in job losses. However, the economy is currently recovering from the impact of the pandemic.

The pandemic has also affected immigration levels. Because of this, Canada’s population growth will come down to 1 per cent this year, compared to 1.4 per cent in the previous two years. Weaker immigration levels are severely affecting the labour force and economic growth of the country. As per the Statement, immigration supported half of the average of the country’s real GDP growth during the period between 2016 and 2019. So in the coming years, Canada will be focusing on welcoming more immigrants to the country.
