More newcomers to acquire Canada citizenship by 2024!

Canada Citizenship

The Canada government will be spending $110 million in 2023-2024 to process citizenship applications. The prediction was made by the campaign platform for the Liberal Party, which once again came to power in Canada in the recent general elections. This indicates a 40 percent increase compared to $75 million, which Canada plans to spend over the coming fiscal year for processing applications. It also means the Canada government is expecting a 40 percent increase in the number of new citizens by 2024.
Canada citizenship comes with a lot of privileges, which permanent residents cannot enjoy. Those who acquire Canada citizenship are entitled for the same rights as those born in Canada. These include the right to vote, to run for political office, to enjoy preferential treatment while applying to government jobs, to travel with a Canadian passport and to travel outside of Canada indefinitely.
Canada Immigration
Canada is a country which is keen about helping new immigrants to integrate well to the Canadian society. Canada’s high rate of citizenship acquisition indicates that the country does a good job in facilitating integration. According to a study conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2018, almost 91 per cent of the immigrants who had lived in Canada for at least 10 years have held citizenship compared to the OECD average of 63 per cent. While in Australia, the percentage of immigrants who held citizenship was 81 percent and the United States, it was 62 per cent.
According to a new study by Statistics Canada, the citizenship acquisition rate was 86 per cent at the time of 2016 Census compared to 82 per cent during 1991 Census. However, the recent years have seen a decline in naturalization rates, mainly because of the citizenship policy changes made by Canada over the past decade. One among these was the introduction of new language requirements and a new citizenship exam in 2010. Another major change that affected the naturalization rates was the increase in the citizenship application fee from $100 to $300.
However, it is expected that the recent policy changes made by the Canada government would improve the naturalization rates in the coming years. Canada has increased its economic class selection standards as a result of which, more immigrants arrive in the country with a higher level of language proficiency. Similarly, the family class immigrants have socio-economic characteristics similar to Canadian citizens and permanent residents sponsoring them. It means they have higher human capital.
Canada has also brought down the language test and citizenship exam requirements for those in the age group of 18-54. Moreover, the Liberals are likely to implement their election promise to waive the citizenship fees completely.
