India remained top source country for Canada immigration in July

Canada immigration

Despite the shortfall in the number of immigrants welcomed to Canada, India remained the top source country for new immigrants in the month of July 2020. A total of 3195 Indians were welcomed to Canada in July, while the total number of immigrants welcomed to the country in the month was 13,645. India was followed by China in terms of the number of new permanent residents with 870 new immigrants. Philippines (865), Pakistan (640) and Nigeria (555) were the other source countries that had a high number of immigrants.

However, the total number of immigrants welcomed to the country has come down significantly in July 2020. July used to be one of the busiest months in terms of Canada immigration in the previous years. But owing to the restrictions imposed following the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic, the month witnessed a 63 percent fall in the intake of immigrants compared to July 2019, when the country welcomed 36,615 new permanent residents. Compared to June 2020 too, the number of immigrants welcomed to the country was low in July 2020.

On the positive side, though the travel restrictions still exist, some new immigrants are allowed to move to Canada now. Among those exempted from travel restrictions include those who obtained their COPR on or before March 18, 2020.

Despite the restrictions imposed in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic, Canada continues to issue Invitations to Apply for permanent residence to eligible immigration candidates. The Express Entry draws continue to take place on a bi-weekly basis.Compared to the previous years, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a larger number of Express Entry invitations so far this year. Provincial Nominee Programs also conduct periodic draws. Irrespective of the restrictions, Canada remains committed to fulfill the immigration targets set under the 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan.

So, if you are thinking about migrating to Canada, you can start the preparations right away so that, by the time the restrictions are lifted, you would be able to move to the country without delay.
