Canada lures techies hit by US visa crackdown

US visa crackdown

The tech workers from different parts of the world are increasingly choosing Canada over the US to build a career and settle in. Silicon Valley has been, for years, the centre of attraction for techies, especially from India. But now, Toronto is taking over the position of the most attractive career destination for techies.
In 2017, Toronto added more tech jobs than Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington DC combined. In 2018, Toronto was second only to the Bay Area in terms of new tech jobs.

There are many factors that made this change happen. One is that, over the years, Silicon Valley has grown to become unlivably expensive, whereas, Toronto is cheaper. Another factor is that Toronto is now a major global centre of Artificial Intelligence (AI) so that skilled workers from across the world are heading to Toronto in search of better career opportunities. Besides Toronto, Waterloo and Vancouver in Canada are also fast turning into global IT hubs.
The hostile immigration policies of the US are yet another reason for Canada emerging as the favourite destination fort techies. This summer, US President Donald Trump suspended H-1B visas for the rest of the year.

On the other hand, Canada is making all effort to attract highly skilled tech workers to the country. Under the Global Talent Stream launched by the Canadian government, applicants with a job offer from a Canadian employer can move to Canada within a period as short as two weeks. Besides Global Talent Stream, Express Entry system and Provincial Nominee Programs are also opening up opportunities for tech workers to migrate to the country. Among the PNPs, those of British Columbia and Ontario conduct exclusive draws for tech workers. The tech companies and tech workers also find the political stability of Canada a favourable factor as they can draw out long-term plans.
In the first six months of this year alone, despite the crisis caused by COVID-19, a total of 21,530 highly-skilled workers came to Canada under its International Mobility Program. If you are a tech worker looking for international career opportunities, Canada is the best destination for you.
