The Canadian tech sector is booming and the tech companies in Canada are actively recruiting employees even as the COVID-19 has severely affected various sectors of the Canadian economy. The Canadian tech sector especially witnessed unprecedented growth in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing and software development in the past few years. Canada is increasingly relying on foreign tech workers to meet the demand for skilled labour force in these areas.
Another important factor that boosts the growth of Canadian tech sector is the visa restrictions imposed by the US on immigrant tech workers. It has led to Canada attracting global tech talent to the country at a huge rate. Many of the tech giants have also expanded their operations to Canada. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are only a few among these.
Canadian tech sector and Immigration pathways
The skilled tech workers who wish to migrate to Canada has a number of pathways to choose from. The most important are as follows:
Canada Express Entry is one of the most popular pathways for global tech workers to migrate to the country. Statistics show that in the past year, Canada issued the highest number of Express Entry invitations to tech workers. The most important advantage of Express Entry is that your immigration application will be processed within a short period of time, sometimes, within as low as six months.
It is ideal for tech workers to apply for Express Entry immigration under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). To be eligible, you must score at least 67 points under the Program’s selection grid, which assesses the candidates on the basis of certain criteria such as age, education, language skills, work experience etc.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Provincial Nominee Programs allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate those who can meet their labour market needs, for provincial nomination from Canada. Some PNPs have tech-specific streams exclusively for tech workers. The most important among these are offered by Ontario and British Columbia. The Ontario Tech Pilot targets candidate with work experience in one of the six tech occupations. To be eligible under the Stream, the candidates must have a valid Express Entry profile. The Tech Pilot Program of British Columbia conducts draws on a weekly basis. The candidates with work experience in one of the 29 targeted occupations under the stream are eligible to receive invitations.
