Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey has revealed that Ontario and Quebec, two of the richest provinces in Canada, recorded the highest employment gains in December 2019. The private sector of Canada had 57000 new employees in the month. The sectors which recorded the highest employment rate in Canada were accommodation, food services and construction. The employment gains in accommodation and food services industries were contributed exclusively by Quebec with employment growing by 25000. At the same time, British Columbia and Ontario together added 17000 new jobs in the construction sector, thus boosting the overall employment rate in Canada.

Compared to 2018, the employment in Canada grew at a faster pace in the year 2019. In the one year between December 2018 and 2019, a total of 320,000 persons got jobs in Canada. In 2019, Canada also witnessed the country’s unemployment rate hitting the lowest point at 5.4 per cent.

Around 25000 persons got employed in December in Ontario. Compared to 2018, employment in Ontario increased by 243,000. According to statistics Canada, this is the largest year-over-year increase since 1987. At the same time, in Quebec, employment increased by 21,000. The unemployment rate in both these provinces stood at 5.3 percent during the period. The other few provinces that recorded high employment rate are Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
