WHATSAPPThe Canada job market is upbeat with a whopping 54000 new jobs reported to have been created in September 2019 alone. At the same time, unemployment in the country dropped to 5.5 per cent. In the third quarter of 2019, Canada job market added a total of 111000 new jobs and the total number of new jobs created in the past 12 months was 456000, according to the Labour Market Survey by Statistics Canada. This incredible job growth mainly concentrated in Ontario, which added 41000 new jobs in September alone.
Demographically, the growth in Canada job market concentrated in the core age group of 25-54. While men in this age group added 36000 jobs in the month of September, women added 33000 jobs. The unemployment rate among the core working-age men was 4.4 percent at the end of September, which is the lowest rate recorded since 1979. Among the core working-age women also, unemployment dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 4.2 percent. Both these categories saw growth in the number of jobs by 134,000 and 78,999 respectively, last year.
Ontario recorded the highest level of job growth and the employment gains were mainly contributed by full-time works. The unemployment rate in the province also dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 5.3 last year, while the employment rate increased by 3.5 percent or 253000 during the period.
Quebec, along with British Columbia, had the lowest unemployment among all the provinces. The unemployment rate was 4.8 per cent in Quebec, which added 13, 600 jobs. At the same time, employment rose by 3200 jobs Nova Scotia during the past one month, with the unemployment rate falling by 0.7 percentage points to 7.2 per cent. The employment rate here increased by 2.2 percent or 10,000 last year.
Newfoundland & Labrador as well as Manitoba also saw unemployment rate drop in September.
Industry wise, healthcare and social assistance sectors topped in adding new jobs. In September alone, this sector added 30000 new jobs. Last year, employment in this sector grew by 108000 or 4.5 per cent.
Another industry sector that saw gains in employment in September was accommodation and food services. The sector added 23000 new jobs in September. The number of self-employed workers also grew last month by 42000, resulting an increase of 106000 new jobs last year. Public sector jobs recorded a growth of 33000 in September, and of 67000 in the last 12 months.
However, in the private sector, employment rate in September remained the same and the number of employees remained up 283,000 in the last year.
