Record-breaking population growth in Nova Scotia thanks to immigration

population growth in Nova Scotia thanks to immigration

Nova Scotia, one of the Atlantic provinces of Canada, is witnessing a record-breaking population growth, mainly owing to immigrants and interprovincial migrants. According to Statistics Canada, the population of the province grew by 12,339 residents during the 12-months period between October 1, 2018 and October 1, 2019. This number includes the 7,165 immigrants who came to the province during these 12 months.

This growth of 1.28 percent is so far the fastest population increase that has happened in the country over a 12-months period since 1972. The total population of province, as on October 1, 2019, is a record 976,768.
The population growth in the province that happened during the third quarter of 2019 was also a record breaker. During the period between July 1 and October 1, 2019, the population of Nova Scotia grew by 5,373. The number of new immigrants who came to Nova Scotia during this period was 2471. According to the Government of Nova Scotia, this is the highest number of immigrants to have entered the province in a quarter, according to the records starting from the Second World War.
Inter-provincial migration contributed 1090 new residents to the province. According to government data, this is the 16th consecutive quarter where Nova Scotia is recording a positive net inter-provincial migration.

Lena Metlege Diab, the Immigration Minister of the province, said in a news release that the population numbers indicate the positive impact of immigration on the province. According to the Minister, “Immigration is a priority and is key to filling persistent labour needs and increasing our population.”
Nova Scotia has been witnessing a downward trend in natural growth of population, which means the difference between the number of births and deaths, since 2016. But this is being compensated by the increase in population growth owing to immigration and interprovincial migration.
Nova Scotia is a Canadian province that welcomes new immigrants with open hands. Do you wish to know more about Nova Scotia migration or explore your options to move to Canada permanently? Contact our Canada immigration consultants now!
