Second Ontario Tech Draw invites 1773 Express Entry candidates!

Ontario Tech Draw

The second Ontario Tech Draw held on August 1 invited 1773 Express Entry candidates with Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) scores as low as 435. Candidates with work experience in one of the six targeted occupations received the invitations in the draw. The draw focused on candidates who had submitted their Express Entry profiles between August 1, 2018, and August 1, 2019.
Ontario launched Tech Draw targeting technology workers last month. In the two draws that have been conducted so far, Ontario has issued Notifications of Interest (NOIs) to a total of 3,396 Express Entry candidates.
Ontario has a booming tech sector and the major tech hubs of Canada including Toronto, Ottawa and Waterloo are located in the province. The tech draws were introduced with an aim to cater to the growing demand for tech workers in the province.
The 2019 CBRE Scoring Tech Talent Report shows that more than 80,000 tech jobs were created in Toronto alone in the last five years.

Ontario Tech Draw

Ontario searches the federal Express Entry pool to select eligible candidates and invite them to apply for provincial nomination. So the first step for a candidate to be considered in an Ontario Tech Draw is to create an Express Entry profile.
Ontario Tech Draws invite candidates with work experience in one of the following six tech occupations:

  • Software engineers and designers (NOC 2173)
  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)
  • Computer engineers (NOC 2147)
  • Web designers and developers (NOC 2175)
  • Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172)
  • Computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213)

Tech draws are conducted through the Human Capital Priorities Stream of Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program(OINP). It is not necessary for the candidates to have a job offer in order to be considered for the tech draws.
The provincial nominee programs like the OINP offer a chance for IT professionals with low CRS score to migrate to Canada. While the minimum CRS score in the latest federal Express Entry draw was 459, in the Ontario Tech Draw held on August 1, candidates with CRS score points as low as 435 were invited.
