Regional Queensland open for skilled migration under 70 occupations

Skilled migration to regional areas of Queensland

Skilled migration to regional areas of Queensland gets a major boost as the Far North Queensland (FNQ) Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) has become effective from September 12 2019. It is expected to run for the next 5 years and help drive economic growth in the regional areas.
The FNQ DAMA is expected to operate through the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and is open to business and employers to sponsor foreign skilled workers in areas like Cassowary Coast, Mareeba, Tablelands, Douglas Shire and Cairns.
A DAMA is a unique agreement allowing employers in the region for greater access to foreign skilled and semi-skilled workers compared to usual migration pathways. DAMA is also unique for the fact that it is an employer-sponsored visa program. The potential employers have to be first approved by the Designated Area Representative (DAR). Only then can they sponsor a foreign worker by submitting a DAMA Labour Agreement request with the Dept. of Home Affairs.
With FNQ DAMA becoming effective earlier this September, regional Queensland is now open to skilled and semi-skilled foreign workers in 70 occupations ranging from mechanics to farm inspectors and from cooks to childcare workers.
In its first year of operation, the FNQ DAMA made available nearly 200 regions for skilled migration to regional Queensland in Cairns Chamber of Commerce occupations list.
Only employers from the designated area in Australia can sponsor foreign skilled and semi-skilled workers under DAMA. There are currently 7 DAMAs in effect in Australia including Far North Queensland, Northern Territory, Adelaide City, Great South Coast in Victoria, Orana in New South Wales, Regional South Australia, The Goldfields in Western Australia.
The experts commented that the FNQ DAMA provides a tailor-made solution to skill shortage faced by businesses. They also project that there were 60,000 jobs that cannot be filled locally. Another expert believed that the new FNQ DAMA will help several industries like agriculture, tourism, health, shipping and hospitality.

Just like the other DAMAs, the FNQ DAMA is expected to provide special concession in work experience and language requirements to certain skilled workers. Eligible candidates can apply for an Australian PR Visa after completing 3 years of stay in regional Australia.
