How Supervisa is different from Parents and Grandparents program of family class immigration?

The Parents and Grandparents Program under the Family Class immigration category of Canada allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada.

As per the Multi-year Immigration Plan of Canada, the Parent and Grand Parent program allocated 28,500 PR admissions for the applicants who are parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It was also announced that, with respect to the 2024 – 2026 immigration level plan of Canada, the values might hike from 28,500 to 32,000 in 2024 and to 34,000 in 2025 and 2026.

While the parents and grandparents’ program of family class immigration received numerous applications beyond the allocated threshold, the application backlog was huge leaving no room for new applications.

With the introduction of Super visa for Parents and Grandparents, Canadian citizens and PR holders can still sponsor and invite their parents and grandparents to Canada despite the outstanding backlog in the family class immigration’s Parents and Grandparents program.

The super visa is a multiple entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This visa allows the holders to stay in Canada for as long two years continuously and this visa is valid for 10 years.

While Parents and Grandparents program sponsors the applicants for PR, Super Visa is a Temporary Resident, Dependent Visa where the visa holders cannot work or have any benefits offered by the country for PR holders and citizens but can stay along with the family members for a span of 2 years straight.
