THE World University Rankings is an annual publication ranking the top universities in the world.  The top 1000 universities in the world are evaluated across teaching, research, international outlook, and reputation. Of a total of 26 Canadian institutions that were listed among the top 1000 universities in the world, the following is a list of the five best universities in Canada that were ranked among the top 200 universities in the list.

1. University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is structured as a collegiate system comprising of 12 colleges. It offers more than 700 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate courses. The university is reputed for excellence in research and has made significant contributions towards the discovery of insulin, stem cell research and the invention of the electron microscope. The university offers courses in Medicine, Business, Engineering, Humanities and Education.

2. University of British Columbia

One of the best universities in Canada, University of British Columbia is among the highest ranked universities in the world. It is one of the oldest universities in Canada, with campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna. It offers around 500 Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. The university houses Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science (TRIUMF) and Canada’s second largest research library with more than 7 million publications.

3. McGill University

McGill University has its main campus located in downtown Montreal and is one of the best universities in Canada. It founded Canada’s first faculty of Medicine in 1829 and to this day, it is highly ranked for clinical subjects internationally. The university has 25% international students and has the highest percentage of PhD students among Canadian research universities.

4. McMaster University

McMaster University is one of the few Canadian universities consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. It is also ranked among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. In addition to its prestigious medical school, McMaster University offers various courses in Engineering, Business, Humanities, Social Sciences and Science.

5. University of Montreal

The University of Montreal is the only Francophone university ranked among the top five. The university has campuses in Terrebonne, Laval, Longueuil, Saint-Hyacinthe and Mauricie. It also has two affiliated schools: Polytechnique Montréal, a specialist engineering school, and HEC Montréal, a business school. A quarter of all the students in the university are international students.
