Canada’s immigration policies giving the country an edge over the US: Trudeau

Canada PR applications

Canada’s immigration policies are giving the country an edge over the US in terms of attracting business, said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women International Summit in Montreal the other day. According to Trudeau, Canada is a country open to immigration. By attracting the talented, well-educated, ambitious, forward-thinking people, Canada has gained a huge competitive advantage over the US.
The PM added that Canadians were “positively inclined” toward immigration and knew from Canada’s experience over generations and centuries that the immigrants created the country’s success. He said Canadians have confidence in the immigration system as it’s rule-based and controlled. The system inducts almost 300,000 new immigrants every year, the number amounting to around one percent of the total Canadian population.

Canada’s immigration policies differentiate the country

A similar opinion to that of Trudeau on Canada’ immigration policies was shared by Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Science, Innovation and Economic Development, last week. He said Canada’s immigration policies are a key element of the country’s “value proposition,” especially in the current geopolitical climate. According to him, Canada’s immigration policies differentiate the country at a time when anti-immigrant sentiments, populist politics, nationalism are on the rise. In this context, he said, Canada’s is open to trade, investment and people.

Canada immigration levels plan

As per the updated immigration levels plan of Canada, the country is planning to welcome 310,000 new permanent residents in 2018. The number will be raised to 330,800 in 2019, 341,000 in 2020 and 350,000 in 2021. According to Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the plan will give vital support to the Canadian economy which is facing widespread labor shortages owing to an aging population and high number of retiring workers. The minister expects that high immigration levels, especially in the Economic Class, would help Canada sustain its labor force, support economic growth and spur innovation.
