Three annexes to Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA) signed

Canada and Ontario have signed three annexes to the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA), with the main aim of increasing francophone immigration . The pact signed by Ahmed Hussen, Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Laura Albanese, Ontario Minister of Citizenship aims to strengthen collaboration between Canada and Ontario for a stronger and more prosperous economy. The Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA) will guide the relationship between Canada and Ontario in the coming five years.
The three annexes to the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA) are about Canada-Ontario collaboration on Francophone immigrants, international students and the role of municipal governments as partners in immigration. The agreement is expected to strengthen long-term relationship between Canada and Ontario in matters related to immigration, economy and humanitarian responsibilities.

Annex to COIA on French-speaking immigrants

The annex to the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA) on French-Speaking Immigrants is related to the promotion of the immigration of French-speaking immigrants. The annex will help Canada and Ontario to increase the number of French-speaking immigrants for meeting the respective French-speaking immigration targets of both Ontario and Canada.
With 622,415 Francophones, Ontario is home to the second largest population of French-speaking people outside Quebec. Ontario has 26 French-language Designated Areas where Francophones can access government services in their own language.

Partnership with Municipalities annex

The partnership with Municipalities annex to the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA) aims to promote collaboration of municipal governments in Ontario with Canada and the province of Ontario in promoting the interests of municipalities related to immigration.

International students annex

The international students annex to the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA)aims to attract talented international students to Ontario and promote their transition to post-graduation employment and/or permanent residency. In the year 2017, Ontario welcomed 156,670 international students, which means 49.2% of all international students who came to Canada.
