Remarkable rise in job vacancies in Canada

Job vacancies in Canada witnessed a 19 per cent rise during the period between June 2017 and June 2018. According to data from Statistics Canada, the job vacancies rose by 87,100 in number during the period and the total number of job vacancies at the end of June 2018 was 547,300. During the same period, the job vacancy rate of Canada rose from 2.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent.

Job vacancies in Canada: Quebec leads

Among the provinces and territories, Quebec witnessed the highest increase in job vacancies in Canada. Quebec had a rise of 38.9 per cent with 32,600 more jobs posted during the period. This is double of the national average. The biggest rise in job vacancies was in healthcare and social assistance sectors. These sectors posted 5100 more vacancies, which means an increase of 60.3 per cent. Quebec has been having increased job vacancies for the eighth consecutive quarter and all sectors showed a 3.2 per cent increase in job vacancy rates in the province.

The other two provinces that saw high job vacancy increase are British Columbia and Ontario. British Columbia had a job vacancy increase of 19,900, or 23.2 per cent. The industry sectors that showed the highest job vacancy rate were accommodation and food services, constructions and retail trade. Currently, British Columbia, along with Prince Edward Island, has a job vacancy rate of 4.7 per cent which is the highest rate in all provinces.
The occupation categories that saw the highest job vacancy increase rates in Canada were trades, transport and equipment operating jobs and sales and service occupations.
In this context, Canada is trying to overcome labour shortage through immigration. Between 2018 and 2020, Canada is planning to admit one million immigrants. Immigration is also observed to be the major reason for the healthy population growth in the country.
