Canadian provinces all set to welcome more immigrants in 2019

Canada PR applications

Many Canadian provinces including Ontario, Manitoba and Newfoundland are vying to increase immigration levels with an aim to address the growing need for workers. For most of these provinces, immigration is the main driver of the growth of population and labor force.
In the case of Ontario, the most populous of Canadian provinces, the expectation is to increase its nomination allocation to 7600 for the year 2019. It means an increase of 1000 nominations compared to its 2018 allocation of 6,600. Compared to 2017 allocation of 6000, the allocation increase is 27.7 per cent.

At the same time, the number of provincial nomination applications to Newfoundland and Labrador PNP has increased by 25 per cent in 2018 compared to the first 10 months of 2017. A major contributor to this increase is the five-year immigration action plan of the province, which targets to raise the number of new immigrants to Newfoundland and Labrador to 1,700 per year by 2022.
Meanwhile, immigration has helped Manitoba obtain remarkable population growth rate, which is the fastest among Canadian provinces. It is expected that 13,000 immigrants will be arriving in Manitoba in the year 2019. Since 1998, around 130,000 people have immigrated to Manitoba through various immigration programs.
The only province that has cut back its immigration cap for the year 2019 is Quebec. The province has announced that it would be admitting 40000 new immigrants in 2019, a reduction of 10000 compared to the previous year. Quebec has explained that the move is part of its efforts to ensure that the newcomers are successfully integrated into the largely francophone community of the province.
At the federal level as well, the immigration levels are expected to rise further. As per the multi-year immigration levels plan of Canada, the country targets to admit 330,800 new immigrants in the year 2019. This is around seven percent higher than the target set for the year 2018, which was 310,000. The new immigration levels plan for 2019-2021 aims to increase admission levels by 13 per cent, from 310,000 in 2018 to 350,000 in 2021.
Acknowledging the contributions of immigrants to the country’s economic growth, Canada has set higher immigration levels targets for the next few years.
