Manitoba immigration will be a decisive factor in the province’s labor market growth, according to the new seven-year labor market outlook of Manitoba. The report predicts that there will be a total of 168,700 job openings during  the years 2018-2024. It means 24,100 job openings every year.
During these seven years, around 168,400 new workers are expected to join Manitoba’s labor force. Of the 24,100 new workers who will be joining the labor force every year, 5,500 will be net in-migrants among whom a significant percentage will be immigrants.

Manitoba immigration and population growth

Manitoba has one of the fastest population growth rate among Canadian provinces. Manitoba immigration through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) is a major driving force in the population growth of the province. The report attributes the fast rate of population growth to the efforts of MPNP to recruit immigrants to meet labor market and entrepreneurial needs of the province. Despite high rate of population growth, Manitoba could maintain second lowest unemployment rate and the third highest labor force participation rate in the country, according to the report.

Golden chance for international students and skilled workers

As per the report, recent changes introduced to MPNP will make it easier for students who have studied in Manitoba to settle in the province. Skilled workers having close family connections in Manitoba and whose spouses have language proficiency and work experience in an in-demand job will be given priority in skilled immigration. Manitoba has also introduced an exclusive immigration pathway linked to the federal Express Entry system to welcome Express Entry candidates to the province.

Manitoba immigration and in-demand occupations

During the next seven years, most of the job openings are likely to be in the sales and services sector, around 19.7 percent. Business, finance and administration will constitute 15.7 percent of the job openings and job openings in education, law and social, community and government services sector will be 14 per cent. A total of 66 per cent of the total job openings will be to replace the retired worker while 34 per cent job openings will be created as a result of the economic growth, according to the report.
