New Brunswick needs more newcomers to solve labor shortage: Survey

A survey conducted by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Moncton (CCGM) based in New Brunswick has found that the biggest challenge faced by the businesses in the region is the shortage of skilled labourers. The employers in New Brunswick think that increasing the number of foreign workers is the solution to this problem.

The survey studied 174 businesses in the city of Moncton between November 23 and December 9, 2018. For 38 per cent of the businesses surveyed, the biggest concern was the difficulty in finding employees with the skills they require. Half of the employers surveyed said they were facing a scarcity of skilled workers. Another 48 per cent of respondents said they found recruiting and retaining employees either difficult or very difficult.

Fifty-five per cent of the employers who participated in the survey have hired a newcomer to the province in the past one year. New Brunswick’s top priority for the year 2019 must be population growth and attracting more immigrants to the province, feel 21 per cent of those who responded to the survey.

Labour shortage in New Brunswick

New Brunswick is facing labour shortage owing to a number of reasons that include an ageing population, low birth rate and migration to other Canadian provinces. Though the economy of the province is growing, employers are looking for workers outside the province and the country to fill the vacant posts.
