Remarkable rise in immigration applications to Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador, the eastern-most province of Canada witnessed a 25 per cent rise in the number immigration applications received in the first 10 months of this year, compared to 2017. This significant rise in the number of invitations is largely attributed to the efforts made by the province through its five-year immigration action plan. The plan, launched earlier this year, aims to increase the number of immigrants to the province to 1700 per year by 2022. In 2017, the number of newcomers who immigrated to the province through Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Pilot was 832.

Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP)

The NLPNP has the following immigration streams:

1. Newfoundland & Labrador Express Entry Skilled Worker

Through this category, NLPNP is able to nominate Express Entry candidates with job offers for permanent residence. The nominated candidates will receive 600 additional CRS points.

2. Skilled Worker

This particular stream is meant for applicants who have a guaranteed job offer obtained from a Newfoundland and Labrador employer. Those who are currently working in the province on a valid work permit is also eligible to apply under this category.

3. International Graduate Category

The candidates who have recently graduated from a recognized Canadian post-secondary education institution and staying in Canada on a Post-Graduate Work Permit can apply under this category. The candidate must be currently working or having a job offer from a Newfoundland and Labrador employer. The job they are having must be in a field related to their study.

4. International Entrepreneur Category

The international entrepreneurs, who plan to settle in Newfoundland and Labrador and create, join or take over a business can apply under this category. The candidate must also manage the business on a daily basis.

5. International Graduate Entrepreneur Category

The graduates of Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic having a Post-Graduation Work Permit can apply under this category if they wish to create or become a partner of a new business in Newfoundland and Labrador.

6. Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) is a federal-provincial joint venture that aims to help designated employers in Atlantic Canada’s four provinces find eligible foreign workers and international graduates to overcome the labour shortage in the region. The program aims to welcome 7000 new immigrants to Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island by 2020.

The province is giving special importance to immigration as a means to deal with its dwindling working-age population. As per the estimates, Newfoundland and Labrador will face a shortage of 35,000 workers by 2025. The province is also attracting international skilled workers to its technology and industry sectors with an aim to diversify its economy which primarily relies on oil and natural gas sector.
