Nova Scotia set record in immigration intake last year

Canada PR applications

Nova Scotia welcomed 5970 new permanent residents in 2018, informed the provincial government. The number is almost 500 more than the previous record set by the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) in 2016. The province welcomed more than 65 per cent of these new permanent residents through the NSNP and the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP). NSNP allows Nova Scotia to nominate economic immigration candidates for permanent residence in Canada. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot, introduced in 2017, allows designated employers in the Atlantic provinces of Canada to hire eligible foreign skilled workers and international graduates for vacant posts that could not be filled locally.

Nova Scotia, which had once been struggling with population decline, saw its population grow for the third consecutive year in 2018. In October 2018, its population grew to a record 964,693 people. The most important reason for this positive change is immigration, as around 15,000 newcomers have arrived in the province in the past three years. Around 71 percent of these newcomers have continued to stay in the province and this is so far the highest retention rate among the Atlantic provinces of Canada.
In 2018, Nova Scotia nominated 1400 candidates for permanent residence in Canada. Of these, 1,094 candidates applied through the three immigration streams of NSNP that are aligned to the federal Express Entry. These streams are Nova Scotia Demand, Labour Market Priorities and Nova Scotia Experience. Out of the total nominations granted, 530 were granted to candidates from the Nova Scotia Demand category, 378 to candidates from the Nova Scotia Experience category and 186 to the Labour Market Priorities category. The remaining 306 nominations went to candidates belonging to the Skilled Worker, Physician and International Graduate Entrepreneur streams of NSNP, which are not aligned to the Express Entry system. Yet another 872 candidates were nominated for permanent residence through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program in 2018.
