The number of unfilled job vacancies in Canada’s private sector reached a record high in the third quarter of 2017, according to a report released by Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). The private sector of Canada is witnessing a labor shortage of around 361,700 jobs, according to the report.
The proportion of unfilled jobs compared to all jobs has reached 2.8%, the highest since 2008. The report has observed that the reason for this condition is the growing economy of Canada and dearth of skilled laborers.

According to a press release issued by CFIB on the report, British Columbia has the highest job vacancy rate, at 3.4% or 60,100 unfilled jobs. In Quebec, the rate is 3.1 percent, Ontario, 3 percent and Saskatchewan, 2.4 percent. In Alberta, the job vacancy rate is 2.2%.
The provinces that witnessed a decline in the job vacancy rates are Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador. While in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the job vacancy rate remained the same.
The labor shortage has triggered a rise in wages in the fields with high demand for workers which include construction, transportation, enterprise services and personal services. The national unemployment rate also remains the lowest in Canada since 2008, at 5.9 percent.
Experts fear that labor shortage may negatively affect the growth of business in the country and expect the government to find solutions.
