Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended its Open Work Permit Pilot program for spouses and common-law partners sponsored by Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The pilot program under the Spouse or Common Law Partner in Canada (SCLPC) Class is being extended till January 31, 2019. This is the third time the government is extending the Open Work Permit Pilot scheme, which was launched in 2014.
Under the Open Work Permit Pilot program, spouses and common-law partners living in Canada who are sponsored by Canadian citizens or permanent residents are eligible for an open work permit. Thus they will be able to work and support their families while waiting for their application for permanent residence under the SCLPC class to be approved. One condition for being eligible for open work permit under this program is that the applicant must have a valid temporary resident status, either as a visitor, student or worker, and live at the same address as their sponsor.
When to apply through Open Work Permit Pilot?
Application for work permit through the Open Work Permit Pilot program can be submitted while submitting the sponsorship application, along with the application for permanent residence. Those who have already applied for permanent residence can apply for open work permit separately. IRCC has also reminded that those who have already received work permit have to extend the same before their current permit expires.
