Canada Parents and Grandparents Program opened on January 28

Canada PR applications

The Parents and Grandparents Program of Canada opened on January 28 to accept expressions of interest from eligible persons and closed soon. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s target for this year was to accept 27,000 Interest to Sponsor forms under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). The Interest to Sponsor forms were accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and the IRCC closed the intake within minutes as they reached the intake target in no time.

According to IRCC, those who have successfully submitted the Interest to Sponsor form will have received a confirmation email within 24 hours.  After weeding out incomplete forms, IRCC will issue invitations to apply until this year’s target of 20000 completed applications is reached.  Those who receive the invitation can submit a completed application along with all the necessary documents within 60 days. Perhaps, IRCC may have to conduct one or more rounds of invitations this year to meet the target.

Parents and Grandparents Program

The Parents and Grandparents Program of Canada allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents above the age of 18 to sponsors their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. The first step in participating in the Program is submitting an Interest to Sponsor for along with documents to prove the candidate’s status in Canada. But one has to keep in mind that the Interest to Sponsor form is not an application.

Minimum income requirement

In order to be eligible to sponsor parents or grandparents under the program, the candidates must meet minimum necessary income requirement. This is to prove that they are capable of financially supporting their family members and themselves once they become the sponsor. As a proof, the potential sponsor and the co-signers will have to submit Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The income of those who reside in the province of Quebec will be assessed by the Quebec’s Immigration Ministry, the Ministère d’immigration, diversité et inclusion (MIDI). If the applicant fails to submit the proof for income eligibility, their application may be refused.
The applicant will also have to submit a signed undertaking to either the IRCC or the Government of Quebec to establish the length of time during which the sponsor will be financially responsible for the sponsored persons. For Quebec residents, the length of this undertaking is 10 years while for others, it is 20 years.
