IRCC now accepts TCF Canada results as proof of French language proficiency

Canada PR applications

The economic immigration candidates to Canada can now submit the score of the Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada) to prove French language proficiency. TCF Canada has thus become the second French language test to be recognized by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Test d’évaluation de français (TEF Canada) is the other option.
It is mandatory for the candidates applying to the economic immigration programs of Canada including those managed by the Express Entry system to prove that they have sufficient level of proficiency in one of the two official languages of Canada–English and French.

TCF Canada

Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada) is administered by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP) run by the French government. The test, designed to assess the French language ability, is available at approved test centres in Canada and in around 150 countries.

English test

Anglophone applicants need not provide proof for their French proficiency unless they claim linguistic proficiency in French. The English-speaking candidates can submit the scores of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) as recognized proof of English language ability.

Efforts to promote francophone immigration

The Government of Canada and provinces like Ontario have taken some conscious efforts to promote the immigration and settlement of French-speaking immigrants in regions outside Quebec. Ontario has an exclusive Express Entry-aligned stream named French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream to facilitate the immigration of francophone immigrants to the province. This stream is one of the most popular and active immigration streams for French-speaking candidates. Ontario has so far issued 1,383 invitations to apply for provincial nomination eligible Express Entry candidates so far this year. As per the 2016 census of Canada, French is the mother tongue to more than seven million Canadians and nearly 950,000 of them live outside Quebec.
