Australia will issue more number of visas to foreign skilled workers who are ready to settle in the regional areas of the country. The Australian government took this decision with an aim to ease the pressure on Australian cities where population is increasing at a rate twice faster compared to other areas.
The announcement in this regard was made by Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s office. According to the announcement, the number of visas issued through regional migration programs will be increased from 23000 to 25000. PM Morrison made clear that Australia was in the path of growing its regional areas. By supporting the growth of regional areas, the Australia government is aiming to achieve an efficient and effective economy for the country.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that a third of Australia’s resident population is born overseas. According to the government census data of 2016, around two-third of the Australian population stays in the capitals of territories and states. The government data further shows that the population rate in the cities grows twice faster.
The applications of those who wish to migrate to the regional areas of Australia receive priority processing. The international students graduated from Australian universities can apply for an extension of their post-study work visa, if they plan to stay in the regional areas.
Skilled foreign workers can apply for Visa 491 to migrate to the regional areas of Australia. The Subclass 491 Skilled Worker Regional Visa was introduced by Australia on 16 November 2019, replacing Visa 489. This is a points-tested visa under which an Australian State or Territory Government or an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area of Australia can sponsor an applicant. The Department of Home Affairs has allocated at total of 14000 places this year for Visa 491.
