Canada welcomed 19200 new permanent residents

Canada welcomed a close to 19200 new permanent residents in June 2020, revealed the data released by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on August 10. It shows a much stronger intake compared to the previous two months and the highest since the country imposed certain restrictions in the wake of coronavirus pandemic in March. In April 2020, the number of PR visas issued by Canada was 4000 and in May, the number increased to 11,000.

Impact of COVID-19 on Canada PR visa

However, the number new Canada permanent residents admitted in June 2020 is lower compared to the same month last year. But this can be attributed to the restrictions imposed by Canada for controlling the spread of COVID-19. Canada had closed the borders on March 18 as a response to the COVID-19 outbreak. So, even those who had confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) were unable to travel to the country. Further, the social distancing measures introduced as part of the preventive measures against COVID-19 also led to the slowing down of the application processing.

Top source countries of Canada immigrants

In June 2020, India was the top immigrant source country, as in the previous months and years. The number of Indians who received Canada PR visas in the month was 6760. Second came the Chinese having received 2010 Canada PR visas followed by the Philippines, USA, Pakistan, Brazil, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Iran and South Korea.

Canada immigration in 2020

The increase in the number of PR visas issued in June 2020 shows that the immigration system of Canada is normalizing. The lifting of certain restrictions is allowing many to overcome the challenges caused by the pandemic to land in Canada. Canada immigration experts think that the immigration levels of Canada will be remaining the same in the months to come as the number of immigrants admitted is usually higher during summer. Though the number is lower compared to the same time period in the previous year, Canada still continues to welcome a significant number of immigrants to the country.
The number immigration candidates issued invitations to apply for Canada PR under the Express Entry stream in every two weeks has remained at 3900. IRCC had excluded Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) candidates in the Express Entry draws held between March and July as the draws prioritized the candidates who were already residing in Canada and hence did not need to travel to the country.  However, in July Canada resumed the Express Entry draws that included FSWP candidates. Besides the Provincial Nominee Programs are also continuing to invite more candidates to apply for provincial nominations. All these indicate the fact that Canada remains committed to its immigration plans set before the outbreak of the pandemic. The IRCC and the immigration minister of Canada have also repeatedly declared their commitment to the immigration goals of Canada and stated that a high level of immigration is pivotal for maintaining the Canadian economy as strong and growing.
