How to apply for Parents and Grandparents Program 2020?

Those who wish to sponsor their parents/grandparents for permanent residence in Canada must submit an online sponsorship interest form to the IRCC before November 3. From these applications, the IRCC will randomly select the candidates who will receive an Invitation to Apply. Those who receive an Invitation to Apply must submit the completed sponsorship application along with the application fees within 60 days. The application package includes forms that have to be filled by both the sponsor as well as the sponsored person.

Interest to Sponsor form

In the Interest to Sponsor form, the person who wants to sponsor must provide information such as the number of your immediate family members, the number of those they want to sponsor, and the personal details of the persons who are to be sponsored. Once they submit the completed form, a confirmation number will be provided, which is to be used for checking if you have received an invitation to apply.

Eligibility requirements for the sponsor

To be eligible to apply under the Parents and Grandparents Program, the person who wants to sponsor must be above the age of 18. They must also prove that they have the necessary income to financially support the family members who have to be sponsored. Once a sponsor receives Invitation to Apply for sponsorship, they and their co-signers need to provide income assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency for three taxation years that immediately precede the date of their application. For Parents and Grandparents Program 2020, the sponsor must meet the income requirements for the years 2020, 2019 and 2018. As the sponsors might not have obtained the 2020 Notice of Assessment by then they need to submit it as soon as it is available.
Further, the sponsor needs to submit a signed undertaking, indicating how long they will be financially responsible for the family members they are sponsoring. For sponsors in all provinces except Quebec, the length of undertaking for parents and grandparents is 20 years. For residents of Quebec, the length of undertaking is 10 years.
