Parents and Grandparents Program 2020 intake likely soon

PGP Program 2020

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has informed that the details of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) intake for 2020 will be released soon. According to recent government reports, Parents and Grandparents Program remains to be one of the most popular sponsorship programs among Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

A huge number of permanent residents and citizens of Canada depend on the Parents and Grandparents Program to bring their relatives to join them in Canada. The first come, first served system of accepting applications was introduced in 2019 after several complaints arose against the previous lottery system. Under the lottery system, the interested sponsors were supposed to submit Interest to Sponsor forms during a month-long window of January, and the sponsors were randomly selected from these applications.
As per the 2019 process, in order to sponsor one’s parents/grandparents for permanent residence in Canada, one must submit an Interest to Sponsor form online. After reviewing the submissions, IRCC will invite eligible sponsors to submit the complete application form, which can be submitted within 60 days of receiving the invitation. IRCC has retained the forms of those who have submitted an interest to sponsor form and received a confirmation number, but did to not receive an invitation to apply in 2019, for consideration in 2020.
The application process for the program caused a lot of controversies in the past few years owing to a few reforms. IRCC introduced the online first-come, first-served process for applying to the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2019. As per this process, the applicants were supposed to submit Interests to Sponsor form online when the system was open to accept the forms till it filled the set quota. But when it was opened on January 28, 2019, the form was available only for a few minutes. The maximum number of forms set to be accepted was 20000.
Later, the federal government of Canada awarded 70 places under the program to settle two lawsuits that claimed that the online system of accepting Interests to Sponsor was unfair. A report by the CBC News says that the settlement was made in secret and the members of the lawsuits were allowed to sponsor their parents/grandparents to immigrate to Canada. Many complaints arose regarding the system, mainly claiming that it discriminated against those who were unable to fill the form quickly and those with a slow internet connection.
